A Case Study of IT Project Management
The Campus Library has decided to integrate the library operations into an Internet-based Library Management System (ILMS). This new system should be able to provide a 24/7 (24 hours a day and 7 days a week) service as a real time learning support resource. It should be able to support routine business functions as well as the management of the information of users and resources. These are also the aims of the system.
The expected system has been mainly described as well as the business rules. PRINCE2, a structured project management method is involved for carrying out the ILMS project. This case study concerns the software development life cycle model, project initiation and project plan included in Starting up a Project (SU), Initiating a Project (IP) and Planning (PL), three processes in PRINCE2. In other words, this case study focus on the preparation of the project.

A Qualitative Examination of the Importance of Female Role Models in Investment Banks
A number of practitioner surveys across a range of industries have cited the lack of senior female role models as a barrier to career progression. There is very little academic literature to explain this at a senior organizational level. An initial review of the extant role model literature led to the inclusion of two further related areas – organizational demographics, as a contextual factor affecting the availability of role models, and work identity development as a link between the lack of senior female role models and the lack of career progression. In seeking to answer the question of why and then how female role models are important for senior women, this study fills an identified gap in the comprehension of the concept of role models and their importance in the workplace. It addresses a need to understand both the key elements of the concept and the mechanism by which they come into play. The research uses qualitative methods, specifically in-depth semi-structured interviews. These were conducted with a senior group of 33 female directors from six global investment banks, in order to elicit their experiences of role models in demographically imbalanced work contexts. Analysis of interview data considered all three areas of role models, demographic context and work identity development. As the women forged their identities in the male-dominated context of global investment banks, what became clear was that who they are and have become was informed by the critical relationships they have had. Whilst clearly some of the women had found male role models with whom to develop these critical relationships, there were some identity issues, particular salient to women, which could not be addressed by men. Thus the findings demonstrated the utility of female role models. This thesis has a number of contributions to make on varying levels: On a conceptual level, this study adds to our understanding of the value of role models, particularly detailing the affective or symbolic value. It has added to the conceptualization of role models, detailing what were the core attributes of individuals chosen to be role models, who they were in relation to the women, how the women used them and why they were important. It has combined the three literature areas of role models, organizational demographics and work identity development in a way not previously done, and has shown empirically that they are related and explain each other. Organizational demographics affect the availability of role models. And it is suggested that the relatively new theory of relational identification is the mechanism that explicates how the presence of positive female role models is a key influence on women’s work identity development. It has clarified the value of role models in extreme gender demographic contexts, and how and why they are important to senior women’s professional development, thereby adding to the theory of role modelling. Practically, the study explains why women in surveys may have been citing the lack of female role models as such a prominent issue, and suggests what some of the issues are that organizations should pay heed to in trying to address this.

A systematic review of measurements of service quality and consumer experience
The challenge of predicting consumer behaviour is widely considered by the literature as a rather daunting, but worthwhile task. Which manager or academic would not be interested in using or developing a framework enabling one to predict future behaviour better than existing measurements? Refering to the old saying, stating that ‘only what gets measured, gets managed’, indicating what the literature addresses as a need to track the influence of change through measurements. In order to address my research question and explore the proposition ‘Can a measurement of service quality based on consumer experience be a better predictor of consumer behaviour?’ this paper examines the existing literature in two fields of literature. On the one hand I will be investigating studies in the context of existing measurements of service quality to assess the first part of my research question to determine the ‘status quo’, application and characteristics of the literature on measurements of service quality. On the other hand the paper will select, appraise, and synthesize the relevant literature on consumer behaviour to address the second part of the research question, if, and if yes, how the phenomenon of consumer experience could be the foundation for a measurement of service quality capable of predicting consumer behaviour better than existing measurements of service quality. By systematically reviewing the existing literature I am aiming on contributing to the literature addressing the challenges of predicting consumer behaviour.

A Spatial Decision Support System for the Development of Multi-Source Renewable Energy Systems
This research involves the development of a comprehensive decision support system for energy planning through the increased use of renewable energy sources, while still considering the role of existing electricity generating facilities. This dissertation focuses on energy planning at the regional level, with the Greater Southern Appalachian Mountain region chosen for analysis due to the dependence on coal as the largest source of generation and the availability of wind and solar resources within the region.
The first stage of this planning utilizes a geographic information system (GIS) for the discovery of renewable energy sources. This GIS model analyzes not just the availability of wind and solar power based on resource strength, but also considers the geographic, topographic, regulatory, and other constraints that limit the use of these resources. The model determines potential wind and solar sites within the region based on these input constraints, and finally the model calculates the cost and generation characteristics for each site.
The results of the GIS model are then input into the second section of the model framework which utilizes a multi-objective linear programming (MOLP) model to determine the optimal mix of new renewable energy sources and existing fossil fuel facilities. In addition to the potential wind and solar resources discovered in the GIS, the MOLP model considers the implementation of solid wood waste biomass for co-fire at coal plants. The model consists of two competing objectives, the minimization of annual generation cost and the minimization of annual greenhouse gas emissions, subject to constraints on electricity demand and capital investment, amongst others. The model uses the MiniMax function in order to find solutions that consider both of the objective functions.
The third major section of this dissertation analyzes three potential public policies – renewable portfolio standard, carbon tax, and renewable energy production tax credit - that have been used to foster increased renewable energy usage. These policies require minor modifications to the MOLP model for implementation. The results of these policy cases are then analyzed to determine the impact that these policies have on generation cost and pollution emissions within the region.

A study of the factors influencing the success of IT-enabled change investments in the UK health sector
The majority of IT projects across various countries and industries fail or do not realise all their intended benefits. Despite previous research into this area and the development of various project success models, IT projects continue to fail at an alarming rate. This research examines the reasons for this phenomenon and extends the existing knowledge by providing insight and learning into how to successfully manage IT enabled change projects within the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. The research used interpretive, retrospective case studies to examine the outcomes of four IT enabled change projects in the NHS. Forty-three face-to-face, semistructured interviews were conducted to collect a rich source of data for the analysis. A comprehensive body of literature was reviewed and key areas/themes were identified that could be expected to influence project outcomes. These themes were used to develop and structure the interview questions and guide the data analysis. The research was designed to first learn from successful projects and then contrast the findings with those from less successful projects. In the first empirical study, P1, two case studies of successful PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) projects in two NHS hospitals were undertaken. The reasons for their success were fully explored and discussed. The second empirical study, P2, consisted of two case studies of less successful projects: the implementations of an electronic Theatre System and an electronic Order Communication System were studied, and the reasons for their lack of success were explored, studied and contrasted with those in P1. Analysis of the evidence from the interviews and review of relevant documents, showed that the main differences between the successful and less successful projects were in the management of the following areas: development of the business case for investment, clinical engagement and involvement, stakeholder management (and, in particular, the clinician/manager relationship), awareness and ownership of benefits, project leadership and the capabilities of the project manager, and the type of the deployed technology. A study of the implications of applying a competency-based approach to performance management in a global organization
Evidence shows that an organization will function more effectively if the various components of its human resource management system are aligned and acting in a mutually supportive way (Baird and Meshoulam, 1988; Semler, 1997; Bowen and Ostroff, 2004). According to some authors a competency-based performance management system supports the concept of alignment by defining and rewarding the behaviour that is expected and associated with effective performance (Grote, 2000; Boam and Sparrow, 1992; Richards and Howard, 2004; Hopen, 2004; Mosley and Bryan, 1992). The assumptions underpinning the competency-based approach to performance management have, however, been questioned by a number of other authors, including Burgoyne (1989), Jacobs (1990), Morgan (1997) and Day, (1988). The motivation for this research study resulted from a perceived misalignment between (1) the desired leadership behaviour espoused by the top team members of a major UK multinational organization, (2) the behaviour prescribed in the organization’s leadership competencies, and (3) the behaviour that was rewarded in practice. The study takes an unusual opportunity to conduct an in-depth study of the application of a competency based approach to performance management. In the first of three linked research projects, one-to-one interviews were conducted with the organization’s six top team members using an approach that combined repertory grid and laddering techniques. The aim was firstly, to identify the top team members’ criteria `in use` for assessing and rewarding leadership behaviour in the context of the organization`s decision to utilise a competency-based approach to performance management, and secondly, to test the degree of alignment of these criteria among the top team members. The data revealed a good degree of alignment regarding the competencies required, but a poor degree of alignment on their definitions of the behaviours needed to support those competencies. It was also found that two competencies mentioned by the top team members were missing from the organization’s new formal leadership competencies. In the second project the output of Project 1 was used in a web-based questionnaire that was distributed to the 301 members of the organization’s Global Services Leadership Team (GSLT), whose performance appraisals were based on the leadership competencies. The purpose of Project 2 was firstly, to test the degree of alignment between the GSLT`s views of what constituted appropriate behaviour and the views of the top team revealed in Project 1, and secondly, to test the degree of alignment of how the desired behaviours identified by the top team were seen to support the leadership competencies. The results showed a good degree of alignment across the GSLT with the top team views of what constituted appropriate behaviour but a poor degree of alignment of understanding of how those behaviours supported the formal competencies. The results also identified a degree of ambiguity within and between the competencies. In the third and final project I conducted a series of participative feedback sessions with key organizational stakeholders based on the results of Projects 1 and 2. Using principles taken from action research, Project 3 was a joint exploration of the problems identified with the performance management system exposed in Projects 1 and 2. The purpose of Project 3 was to stimulate the organization to make changes to improve the alignment and effectiveness of the performance management system. Project 3 identified that it was deemed unrealistic and inappropriate to try to define a unified set of competencies that could be applied in all contexts and applied to all of the different challenges facing the organization. The principle proposal resulting from this study is the need for a modification to alignment theory. It is proposed that extant competency literature appears to be overly prescriptive and fails to take account of contextual factors and the particular challenges facing individuals. The proposed modification to alignment theory requires the inclusion of the process of dialogue and the need for the active involvement of the leadership team members in facilitating understanding and effecting organizational alignment when applying a competency-based approach to performance management. It is proposed therefore that effective leadership action is critical to the creation of alignment that ultimately leads to more effective performance at the level of the individual, the process and the organization. Suggestions for further research to explore these proposals are made.

Addressing the ghost in the machine
Background and Purpose: In response to the cost transparency of the internet which has facilitated consumer switching behaviour, marketing practitioners have used the umbrella term of engagement to describe the experiential response to mechanisms by which consumers can be enticed and co-opted into behaviour presumed to be conducive to purchase or future purchase. It is a concept that, until recently, has been largely circumvented by the marketing academic world. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review is to generate a workable definition of consumer brand engagement online, predicated on a research model that builds on extant academic and practitioner evidence, which by virtue of its construction: 1. Shifts the locus of theoretical attention from a mechanistic/structuralist view of online consumer experience, increasingly recognized by the academic world as insufficient in its explanatory power, to more a more unitary approach that aligns behaviourist causality with ‘experiential intensity’ 2. Establishes a common discourse, thereby reconciling academic and practitioner perspectives 3. Provides the theoretical base for preliminary work on experiential metrics, and creates a platform for future research. Methodology: The review uses ‘realist synthesis’ to refine theory from a broad range of heterogeneous sources. The chapter on methodology provides a clear audit trail showing how decisions were made, evidence scrutinised and evaluated, and findings synthesised. Findings: The review provides support for the model and the definition of online consumer brand engagement, as well some steps towards operationalising the construct. The limitations of the methodology and learning points are discussed, as well as the contribution to future research and practice.
